Hansen's disease family compensation system Acceptance starts from this month 22 November 19:51

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare began accepting claims on the 22nd of this month in response to the enactment of a law to pay compensation for families of former patients with leprosy.

The law stipulates that the state should pay compensation if the country's false isolation policy over leprosy has caused not only the ex-patients but also families to suffer discrimination.

In the preface, the law was enacted on the 15th of this month, stating that the National Assembly and the government deeply apologize to clarify the responsibilities of the country.

In response, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has begun accepting claims for compensation on the 22nd of this month.

The billing method will be introduced on the website of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and a dedicated telephone consultation service will be opened on the 22nd of this month.

The number of families subject to the compensation system is expected to be about 20,000 to 30,000, and 1.8 million yen will be paid to spouses and parents of former patients, and 1.3 million yen will be paid to siblings and relatives living together .

The deadline for claims is within 5 years from the start of acceptance (until November 21, 6), and payment of compensation is expected to begin as early as January next year.
