The Asturian town, belonging to the Comarca de la Sidra, celebrates its Week of Les Fabes, with contests, tastings, tastings and a conference in which several council restaurants participate

A thirteenth-century villa, picturesque fishing villages, green meadows, long beaches, steep cliffs, the Cantabrian Sea and ... dinosaurs. All this and more houses the small council of Colunga, a magical place of 3,500 inhabitants, located in the eastern part of the Principality of Asturias, in the shadow of the Sierra del Sueve.

Most of the tourism in this area belonging to the Comarca de la Sidra is taken by the coastal parishes of La Isla and Lastres, especially in summer, however, the quiet and historic Colunga, capital of the council, inside, passes a little more unnoticed, despite having a monumental historic center of great artistic value . These days, the town prepares to celebrate one of its most anticipated and massive events, which will disturb its usual calm. The traditional Week of the Fabes (from Friday 6 to Monday 9 December) will fill Colunga with visitors interested in tasting, buying and knowing more about this renowned product of the land. The event, which this year celebrates its 29th edition, includes tastings, contests, tastings and a craft market, in addition to a conference in which, for four days, a fortnight of restaurants and bars in the municipality will pay tribute to the star product of gastronomy Asturian, offering different types of menus, whose main dish will be composed of fabes, prepared in any of its forms, and accompanied by the most varied foods of the local cuisine.

Among the participants will be some of the most recognized establishments in the town, such as Casa Laureano (Plaza Mercado, 17), the Mocambo cider house (Carril de Les Monxes, 18), Loreto Bar (Camino les Xuaques, 23) or Sidrería Avenida (Av. de la Reconquista, 15), and the rest of the municipality, such as VistaAlegre restaurant (Playa de La Griega, s / n), next to La Griega beach; El Barrigón de Bertín (San José / AS-257), one of the first hospitality businesses established in Lastres, or El Rápido (General Road, s / n) and Casa Eutimio (San Antonio, s / n), also in said fishing town. The price of the menus will range between 18 and 34 euros.

Among the scheduled activities, on Saturday, December 7, at 12.30 pm, a tasting contest will take place for the best homemade companion in Asturias (the accompaniment that is used for the preparation of the fabada, such as chorizo, bacon or blood sausage, which is removed after cooking and is usually served separately so that each person puts on their plate of fabes what they like best). To participate it will be necessary to register previously (more information, here). After this contest, a cider tasting will be carried out with the protected designation of origin Sidra de Asturias (13.30 h.). Both events will be free and will be held in the Plaza de Abastos de Colunga, in front of the monumental building of the Town Hall, a 17th-century baroque palace, with a central tower that houses the shield of the former owners, the Álvarez de Colunga family.

The most anticipated event will be on Sunday 8, starting at 10 am, at the Plaza de Abastos, with the Les Fabes Fair , in which these beans will be exhibited and sold, as well as other local food and artisanal products. Within that framework, the proclamation will be read and the Faba de Honor will be given and the prizes for the Best Producer of Asturian Faba (from 12:30 pm). Walks

After a good stew it is recommended to walk through the old town of the town, irregularly traced, and discover treasures such as the slender Church of San Cristóbal El Real (19th century), the hermitage of the Virgin of Loreto (17th century) or the houses and palaces with arcades of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that follow. It is also obligatory to visit the neighboring Lastres , 4 km from Colunga. Considered as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, the small coastal town of the council is nestled on the side of a hill, which makes it to travel its narrow and steep streets, delimited by buildings close together of white facades and charming balconies, be it a challenge for which you have to be fit. The reward is incredible views of the sea, the mountains and this villa hanging over the Cantabrian. Below, a vibrant fishing port with the continuous movement of boats that go fishing.

Between Lastres and Colunga, there is also an essential stop for children: the Jurassic Museum of Asturias , an exhibition area on the sea that hosts one of the most complete and didactic samples about the life and history of dinosaurs through a chronological sequence Huge sculptures of these outdoor reptiles welcome visitors, who can also participate in workshops and enjoy a children's playground (adults, 7.21 euros; children up to 11 years, 4.25 euros).

Beyond the fabes, with all kinds of accompaniment (chorizo, clams, assorted fish, wild boar), how well they enter the cold days, fish, shellfish and cachopo are great protagonists of the menus in this marine council. To drink, you can not miss a freshly spiced cider. It is worth traveling the 10 km that separate Colunga from the Fito Mar restaurant (La Espasa, s / n, Caravia. Tel .: 985 85 33 26) to try their fish and shellfish (squid, monkfish, scallops ...) and rice with lobster or clams facing the sea. A classic in Colunga is Casa Laureano (Plaza Mercado, 17. Tel .: 985 85 21 04), with homemade dishes such as fish stew and, for dessert, rice pudding. In Lastres, located on the sea with spectacular views, El Mirador (San Roque, s / n.
