Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has inaugurated, by default, the third international workshop for the second session of the International Competition for Universities to Design Buildings Based on Solar Energy (the Solar Decathlon Middle East), which is organized by the Authority in conjunction with “Expo 2020 Dubai” at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Complex. Solar Energy, in the presence of Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, and Manal Al Bayat, CEO of Expo 2020 Dubai.

In his welcoming speech, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said: “I am pleased to welcome you to the third international workshop of the second edition of the Global Competition for Universities to Design Solar Buildings (Solar Decathlon Middle East), organized by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, under the auspices of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, within the framework of the partnership between the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, with the US Department of Energy, hosted by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, to encourage youth To create designs for smart and sustainable homes that use solar energy, and are suitable for the cultural, social and climatic environment of the Middle East.”

He added: "The second edition of the competition is of great importance because it coincides with (Expo 2020 Dubai), and Dubai's preparation for an exceptional and historic hosting of this huge global event, with which Dubai receives delegations from 192 countries, and coincides with the year 50, where efforts are combined to achieve more gains and achievements. and supporting the vision of the wise leadership for the next 50 years.

He continued, "The authority works to provide opportunities for young people to unleash their energies and encourage them to be creative and innovative, to develop innovative solutions that support the Emirate of Dubai, a future city that adopts sustainable solutions, and contributes to supporting global efforts to reduce global warming and confront the negative effects of climate change."

A group of architecture, sustainability and innovation experts participated in the workshop, along with the teams participating in the second edition of the competition.

Teams compete in 10 different areas: architecture, engineering and construction, energy management, energy efficiency, comfort standards, home appliance performance, sustainable transportation, sustainability, connectivity and innovation.
