The convening marks that the Pinglu Canal has officially entered the stage of construction.

The Pinglu Canal is a networking project that optimizes and improves the national water transport network and accelerates the construction of a national comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network. Practical actions for development are of great strategic significance to the economic and social development of Guangxi and Southwest China.

After the canal is completed and opened to navigation, it will directly open up the shortest, most economical and most convenient access to the sea in the inland Guangxi and the southwest and northwest regions of my country; it will change the current situation that Guangxi is close to the sea but no rivers are navigable to the sea, and make the capital Nanning a coastal city. Form the urban agglomeration pattern of Nanning, Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang, promote the construction of an international gateway port in the Beibu Gulf, and promote the development of the seaward economy; it will open up a new sea-entry channel for the Xijiang Golden Waterway, and form a river-sea circulation channel to effectively connect the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. ; It will promote Guangxi and the southwest region to continue to deepen economic and trade cooperation with ASEAN and the "Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership" (RCEP) countries, accelerate the integration into the construction of a China-ASEAN community of shared future, and better serve the construction of a new development pattern.

The construction of the Pinglu Canal has merit in contemporary times and benefits in the future.

  According to Chen Hongqi, Secretary of the Party Group of the Department of Transportation of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Pinglu Canal is a river-sea connection project between the main stream of the Xijiang River and the Beibu Gulf. Beibu Gulf, with a total length of about 135 kilometers, will shorten the voyage to the sea in the middle and upper reaches of the Xijiang River by about 560 kilometers after completion.

The construction content of the Pinglu Canal project mainly includes waterway engineering, shipping hub engineering, cross-river facility engineering along the line and supporting engineering.

The waterway grade is grade I inland river, the estimated total investment of the project is 72.73 billion yuan, and the construction period is 54 months.
