The insurance certificate, the green sticker, which must be placed on the windshield of your vehicle each year could quickly be ancient history.

In place for nearly 40 years, it allows motorists to certify that they are properly insured.

However, the Federation France Assureurs wishes to delete it.

Why is the green sticker, mandatory for almost 40 years, in danger of disappearing from our windshields?

France Assureurs, a federation of 247 insurance companies, wishes to remove it.

The first reason could be environmental: 50 million insurance certificates are printed each year.

Removing it could therefore save paper.

But the real reason is quite different.

Check at a glance

This sticker was created to make it possible to check at a glance that all vehicles are well insured, but today, other technical means exist.

Insurers have created their own dematerialized file, in which all new insured vehicles are registered within 72 hours, at most.

A file to which the police have had access for three years.

To check, just enter the license plate number of the car concerned and you have all the information about the vehicle, including its insurance.

For its part, Bercy confirms that work has been underway for several months with insurers and consumer associations.

A work that has made it possible to move forward on a certain number of points.

However, it is still necessary to prove the total reliability of this dematerialized service, insists the ministry.

For the moment, nothing is final yet.

If the abolition of the famous green sticker seems to be on the right track, nothing will be done before the appointment of a new government.
