• Inflation Food prices will continue to rise this year after hitting a decade high in 2021

  • OCU report How much has the shopping basket risen with the IPC soaring?

The escalation in prices of energy and raw materials and the war in Ukraine have increased "online" prices in large supermarket chains by 9.4%, but not all have increased in the same way since some accumulate increases higher than 10%, according to a study by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU).

According to this study on 156 food, hygiene and drugstore products in ten Spanish cities, "online" prices in the main supermarket chains rose by an average of 9.4% between March 20, 2021 and March 8 of the present anus.

But this

average is higher in some chains

:

Carrefour

accumulates a rise of 12.1% in the last twelve months and

Mercadona

11.4%, while in

El Corte Inglés

and

Hipercor

the rise has been 7.7%.

However, both Mercadona and Carrefour continue to be among the cheapest national chains, along with Alcampo, according to the organization.

The rises experienced have been due in large part to the

rise in prices of energy and raw materials

, such as fertilizers, wheat or oil, which are taxed on the production and distribution of agricultural and livestock farms, but also to the war in Ukraine and the consequent geopolitical tensions.

These

increases affect 84% of the products analyzed

in the study, especially food products.

Among the most affected are oils

(average price increase of 34%),

fish

(16%), packaged foods (11%) and

dairy products

(11%), and these increases, according to consumers, are especially felt in private label products, since they start from lower prices.

The OCU describes these

increases as very worrying

since if they continue they will mean an increase of more than 500 euros a year in products in the shopping basket of an average family.

Given this situation, it requests the Government to implement measures to protect households with a more vulnerable economy.
