Inflation is entrenched in the supermarket: the basket is 20% more expensive than a year ago. Neither the VAT reduction approved by the Government nor the promotional war unleashed between the main distribution chains are felt on the ticket.

The Government reduced the VAT on a series of foods considered basic since January 2023 to try to contain inflation. supermarkets launched a war of promotions and discounts to protect their market share at the cost of giving up some profit margin. But neither action has led to real containment of food prices.
