After a year of commercial operation, the first "Barakah" produces 10.5 terawatts of environmentally friendly electricity

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation celebrated the one-year anniversary of the commercial operation of the first Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the Al Dhafra region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

first stop

The Corporation revealed in a statement that since its commercial operation in April 2021, the first plant in Barakah has produced more than 10.5 TWh of green electricity for homes and businesses across the UAE, enabling companies to obtain funding for environmental, social and governance policies from Through environmentally friendly energy certificates.

The first station was also able to reduce more than five million tons of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to removing more than one million cars from the country’s roads in an entire year, which made the Barakah stations the largest contributor to reducing the carbon footprint in the Arab world, as well as Its pivotal contribution to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

second stop

The second station in "Barakah" began commercial operation on March 24, 2022, that is, within less than a year of the commercial operation of the first station, which doubled the volume of benefits provided by nuclear energy to the UAE, as well as applying the lessons learned from the commercial operation of the first station, while continuing Adhere to the highest safety standards.

With the commercial operation of its first and second stations, "Barakah" stations will have achieved half of its goal of providing 25% of the country's electricity needs over the next six decades.

With regard to the remaining stations, the construction of the third station was completed in 2021 and is currently undergoing operational preparations, while the fourth station has reached the final stages of construction operations, while the total percentage of completion in the four stations has reached more than 96%.

Sustainable development

Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, said: “One year has passed since the commercial operation of the first plant in (Barakah) in April 2021, during which it became one of the most important pillars of sustainable development in the UAE, providing large amounts of zero-emissions electricity. carbon dioxide 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

He added: "Barakah plants are considered among the main contributors to achieving the goals of the UAE initiative to reach climate neutrality, with their pivotal role in accelerating the process of reducing the carbon footprint of the energy sector through the production of electricity and its vital role in reducing carbon emissions."

Al Hammadi continued: “The Barakah plants are only the beginning, as we invest in research, development and innovation in areas such as hydrogen, regional electricity networks, and small nuclear power reactor technology, in order to build on the strong foundations we have laid, especially providing hundreds of rewarding jobs for Emirati competencies, and we will continue to form A source of inspiration for an entire generation of green electricity pioneers and climate change leaders, to join the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program in the coming years.”

Refueling

According to the statement of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, the "Nawat Energy Company" of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has started the process of refueling the first plant reactor, according to the established plan and schedule, as well as carrying out planned maintenance operations, as well as reorganizing the fuel packages in the reactor. To ensure optimal and efficient operation of the plant.

More than 1,000 experts and specialists in nuclear energy participate in these activities to ensure compliance with local regulatory requirements and global standards.

Once this process is completed, the first plant will resume production of environmentally friendly electricity at its maximum capacity for the next 12 months, before refueling is carried out again.

fully operational

Once fully operational, the four Barakah plants will produce up to 5,600 megawatts of environmentally friendly electricity, and will reduce 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions each year.

By 2025, Barakah plants will produce 85% of the environment-friendly electricity in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and it will be the largest contributor to reducing carbon emissions from the energy sector in the UAE.
