• According to the Pôle Emploi study on manpower needs, employers expect 247,000 recruitments in Occitanie, including 53,000 in Toulouse.

  • The health professions are making a thunderous entry into the Top 5 most sought-after occupations while skilled workers in the industry are struggling.

  • The need for IT specialists is decreasing, but they remain highly coveted in the Pink City.

While the health crisis continues to last, the horizon is not completely blocked on the employment front. If we at least rely on the famous annual study of manpower requirements (BMO) by statisticians from Pôle Emploi, which takes the pulse of employers and asks them if they intend to hire this year.

In Occitania, there are 246,580 recruitment projects for 2021, only 3.1% less than in 2019, before the Covid-19.

In addition, 53,000 of them (20%) are to be filled in the Toulouse employment area.

A territory, it is official, more severely affected by the crisis because of what Serge Lemaître, the regional director of Pôle emploi calls “the air hole of aeronautics”.

Greater Toulouse concentrates 40% of the new unemployed identified for a year in the region, or 7,500 additional job seekers.

The exception of computer scientists

So who are the most likely to (re) find? It all depends on the geographic scale. If we consider all of Occitania, the crisis has changed the job market. In particular, it has propelled the medical professions, from nurses to nursing assistants, into the Top 5 of the most sought-after (non-seasonal) professions, with, it is more traditional, home or household help (6,750 recruitments planned), employees kitchen and housekeepers. On the other hand, because of the air gap in aeronautics, therefore, the trades for which hiring intentions are declining the most are computer engineers, turn-millers and more generally skilled workers in the industry.

But in Toulouse, an IT executive (or engineer or manager) remains the most sought-after profession, with more than 3,000 recruitment intentions, as shown in the table below.

Finally, when 43% of the jobs anticipated in Occitania are seasonal, their proportion is only 15% in the Toulouse employment area, which therefore offers more stable job prospects.
