The Association of German Travel Management (VDR) estimates that due to the corona pandemic, German companies could have spent a total of up to 50 billion euros less on business travel in 2020 than in 2019. "We estimate that they achieved a medium to high single-digit rate overall last year Have spent billions on business trips, ”says Managing Director Hans-Ingo Biehl to WELT AM SONNTAG.

That would be a decrease of up to 90 percent.

The VDR estimates are based on monthly surveys among its 560 member companies.

Some large corporations have saved hundreds of millions on business trips last year.

Biehl assumes that the expenditures will also be well below the pre-Corona level in the coming years.

Biehl's findings are underscored by a survey by WELT AM SONNTAG among the 30 DAX companies: Not only did almost all of them radically reduce their travel expenses.

Many expect that the pre-crisis level will no longer be reached.

The chemical company BASF reduced the so-called discretionary costs, which also include travel expenses, by around 200 million euros.

The employees of the plastics manufacturer Covestro accounted for a higher single-digit million amount instead of a middle double-digit amount, while at the engine manufacturer MTU the expenses were reduced by a good eleven million to just under four million euros.

The automotive supplier Continental reduced its spending by 70 percent.

The Hanover-based company is currently not extending any expiring Bahncards.

Other companies are apparently proceeding in a similar way: according to information from WELT AM SONNTAG, the number of Bahncards fell by seven percent last year.

The railway nevertheless believes in positive effects from Corona.
