Profile Sheldon Adelson, the 'boss' of Las Vegas
American tycoon
Sheldon Adelson
died at the age of 87 this Tuesday from cancer, according to his company announced in a statement.
Adelson, founder of the Las Vegas Sands group,
chose Madrid to build Eurovegas
, the European version of Las Vegas, in September 2012. As
Esperanza Aguirre was
president of the Community of Madrid, the project was to become a reality in Alcorcón.
Eurovegas was estimated to generate an investment of around
€ 17 billion
and the creation of tens of thousands of jobs.
The opposition of the PSOE opposed the construction of the game and leisure complex.
To carry it out, Adelson demanded some reforms from the then government of Mariano Rajoy, such as the Anti-smoking law or the elimination of
online
casinos
as well as adjusting a policy of tax exemptions.
In December 2013, Rajoy rejected Adelson's demands to lift Eurovegas
.
In addition to his disagreement with the Rajoy Executive, several international banks refused to grant a loan to the tycoon to finance the first phase of the Eurovegas project in Madrid.
He needed to finance around 5,000 million.
Trump supporter
Adelson was a mainstay of the Republican Party and a loyal supporter of
Donald Trump
as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu
.
His wife describes him as
"a philanthropist, political activist and entrepreneur. He
was my soul mate," he wrote in a statement.
"The pain of announcing the death of my husband is incomparable," said the woman with whom he has been married "32 years."
Sheldon
"was the son of an immigrant family"
who achieved success in business "thanks to his strength, genius and integrity. His was the story of all American entrepreneurs."
"He was kind and donated his fortune to charity, always anonymously and without asking for anything in return," underlines Miriam Adelson.
"
After winning and giving so much, you deserve this break,"
concludes the widow.
