  • Jérôme Brasseur's “Copain comme cochon” beer is made from the fat of Sarthois pork rillettes.

  • Following the success of the first two tours, the brewer prepared a third brew.

  • Nearly 1,700 bottles are available at the Barreau Brewery in Ecommoy and at La Petite Auberge in Malicorne.

A beer with rillettes?

The bet seemed risky… However, in the Brasserie Barreau, in Ecommoy (Sarthe), the drink was all the rage.

A victim of his own success, Jérôme Barreau, who manages the establishment, even had to repeat the experience.

This is his third tour.

“It was totally unexpected!

Basically, it was above all a beer for fun, but it's a product that appeals to people, ”admits Jérôme Barreau.

In his brewery of the same name to the south of Le Mans, he prepared his third brew of his new beer “Copain comme cochon”.

A craft beer made from pork rillettes

La Petite Auberge de Malicorne (Sarthe) has been working for almost thirty years with local producers of rillettes.

Its restaurateur, Dominique Bourneuf, is at the origin of this surprising beverage.

“I thought about that during confinement,” he says.

I thought it would be good to use a local product and especially the local specialty, rillettes!

I knew it would work.

Dominique Bourneuf has worked with Jérôme Barreau since he started making beers five years ago.

As with the two previous releases, 27 kg of pork rillettes, mixed with hops, were brewed to obtain nearly 1,700 bottles.

“During the first brew in May, Jérôme told me 'never again', says Dominique Bourneuf.

Fat is very complicated to remove and it took a long time to get rid of it.

"

"There is a little fat on it, obviously"

“When I saw the success, I said to myself that I was going to do it again, laughs Jérôme Barreau.

I still hope this will be the last tour.

The beer, whose funny name was found by a friend of the brewer, is to be enjoyed at room temperature.

“This is how we can discover its light fragrance and its smoky side,” says Dominique Bourneuf.

“It tastes like rillettes,” adds Jérôme.

There is a little fat on it, obviously, but it is a product that attracts.

"

Sold between 4 and 6 euros, the 6.6 degree drink, which foams less than a classic beer, is available at the Barreau brewery, in Ecommoy, and at the Petite Auberge, in Malicorne-sur-Sarthe.
