Syria: Exemption of low-income workers from tax ... and a grant for all employees

The exemption includes those whose income reaches 50 thousand pounds

The office of the Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, said today that it has moved to exempt more low-income people from income tax, while the economy is suffering under the weight of US sanctions and a war that has been raging for about 10 years.

The decree, the first legal amendment in years, expands the segment of low-income workers who are exempt from tax to include those whose income reaches 50,000 lira ($ 40) or less per month, up from 15,000.

The presidency said it was adjusting other tax brackets to ease the tax burden on low-income people.

In a separate decision, the presidency said that al-Assad would provide a one-time grant to all workers in state institutions, including the army, with a value of 50,000 pounds.

Pensioners will get 40,000 lira.
