The judge of the National Court that investigates the Popular case has agreed to summon the testimony of the president of the Bank of Santander, Ana Patricia Botín, on May 28 . Judge José Luis Calama thus accepts the request presented by one of the accusations made in the investigation regarding the fall of the financial entity, which ended up in the hands of Santander.

The judge also cited a few days later, on June 4, Rodrigo Echenique, currently president of the Popular and Santander Spain. Echenique already gave public explanations about what happened in July 2018, in the Congressional Investigation Commission on the financial crisis. However, it will be the first time that Botín has to answer questions about the matter. When he appears as a witness, the law obliges him to respond to all that is raised by all the parties and to tell the truth.

In another order, the judge agrees to keep the citation planned as a witness for Luis de Guindos for April 2. At the request of the former minister, the statement that will be made through videoconference. The list of testimony previously agreed by the judge includes the former governor of the Bank of Spain Luis María Linde (March 11), the president of the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) Sebastián Albella (March 18) and his predecessor in the charge, Elvira Rodríguez (March 4).

Calama ordered the round of appearances after having taken a statement as charged to, among others, the former presidents of the financial entity Emilio Saracho and Ángel Ron, who reproach each other for the fall of the Popular.
