Tensions remain between groups that were hitherto united to fight the rebellion of the Houthis. In the southern city of Aden, southern separatist forces still hold positions, more than a week after fighting with government forces. And this standoff between the old allies now extends to a neighboring province, still in southern Yemen.

On Tuesday in Abyane province, the separatists took control of two barracks of government forces. Victims have been reported. The confrontation thus wins this neighboring province of Aden, where in early August, fighting has caused dozens of deaths between these groups.

Aden where southern separatists have agreed to evacuate some official buildings in recent days. But they continue to occupy military positions and their flag is now visible in the city.

The separatists want to revive South Yemen, independent until 1990. This has not prevented in recent years to fight alongside Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, against the Shiite rebellion of the Houthis.

Tensions over the past few hours show the limits of efforts by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to try to bring calm to southern Yemen.

It is a challenge for the alliance between these two countries since the Emirates are close to the separatists while the Saudi kingdom does not want a new division of Yemen.
