Taxpayers will be able to pay their taxes at a tobacconist "from 1 July 2020, and from 1 January in 18 test departments," announces Gerald Darmanin.

ON DECRYPT

The tobacconists again put to contribution. After the possibility of opening a bank account in a tobacconist, we will soon be able to pay our taxes. This is announced by Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of Public Accounts, in the Dauphiné columns. We'll explain how it's going to be.

You can actually pay taxes at the tobacconist in the same way that you already pay your fines or tax stamps. From the 1st of January next, in 18 test departments - the Loire, for example - and in the rest of the country at the beginning of the summer. What advantages? A "more accessible" service, says Gérald Darmanin. There are indeed six times more tobacco shops than tax centers in France. And most importantly, they open earlier, close later, and can go on weekends. It would simplify the process a little, especially for those who live in rural areas.

"It's the wish of many taxpayers"

We can pay by card, for an unlimited amount, and in cash, up to 300 euros. "This is the wish of many taxpayers," said Gérald Darmanin, "because they are old, they do not have internet or no bank account."

By entrusting the tax regulations to tobacconists, Bercy could save several million euros a year, according to the Senate Finance Committee. But what taxes will be affected, since the income tax is now deducted at source? Property tax ? Housing tax ? Royalty fee ? We have no details for the moment.
