Recently, the so-called 'eat-and-run crime', which eats food and runs away without paying, is on the rise.

The number of cases reported to the police, including in Chungcheong Province, has reached 100,000 every year nationwide.

Experts are pointing out that a social message that they must be caught must be delivered amid the criticism that the blunt punishment is increasing the damage.

This is a report by reporter Kim Cheol-jin.

A sushi restaurant in Asan last month.

Six men and women who ate 220,000 won worth of alcohol and snacks disappeared without counting.

The owner, who could not find them for more than a week, eventually posted an article on the Internet saying, "If I do not embroider myself, I will reveal my face", and when the article became a hot topic, the missing customers sent money for food saying, "I was drunk."

Posts complaining about such damage have been ongoing not only in Asan, but also in Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan, all over the country.

According to the actual statistics of the National Police Agency, nearly 100,000 reports related to non-drinking are received every year.

In Daejeon, reports of no-drinking meals, which had stalled due to social distancing, are on the rise again this year, reaching close to 2,000 until last month.

That equates to more than 7 cases per day.

There is an increasing number of cases where even a forensic team is dispatched to catch them, but it has more than doubled in two years in Daejeon alone.

Self-employed people say they don't report small amounts of money, leading to more true zero-exploitation crimes.

In particular, it is not easy to catch, and even if caught, the punishment is weak, so they do not report it.

Experts say that in order to prevent unabated crime, a message of punishment and the idea that running away can be caught must be formed in society.
