Two girls aged 8 and 11 lost their lives on Tuesday in the fire of a pavilion in Coupvray, in Seine-en Marne.

The fire broke out in the middle of the night and destroyed the pavilion.

Five people were able to escape the flames, but the two girls were unable to get out.

An investigation has been opened to determine the causes of the fire.

Two girls aged 8 and 11 perished on Tuesday in the fire which destroyed a pavilion in Coupvray, in Seine-et-Marne, about forty kilometers east of Paris, said a police source.

The fire, whose origin was not immediately known, broke out around 3:50 a.m. and completely destroyed the pavilion.

Two families were in the building at the time of the tragedy.

An open investigation to determine the causes of the fire

Five people were able to escape the flames but two girls remained inside.

"A minor tried to take the girls out and was seriously burned on his left arm. He was taken to hospital with a life-threatening condition," a police source told AFP.

The bodies of the two victims were found in the rubble during the day.

The Meaux public prosecutor's office opened an investigation to determine the causes of the fire and entrusted it to the Chessy police station and the departmental security.
