A joint public-private inspection is implemented to identify fake patients who are unnecessarily hospitalized to collect insurance money.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Financial Supervisory Service announced that from next month, they will visit 500 hospitals and clinics across the country to check the status of inpatients in traffic accidents together with local governments and non-life insurance associations.

This joint inspection is intended to detect fake patients who are falsely hospitalized or unnecessarily long-term hospitalized to get insurance money even though outpatient treatment is possible due to a minor traffic accident.

To this end, we plan to examine whether medical institutions are properly complying with the status of absence of inpatients and their obligations to keep records of going out and staying overnight.

The inspection targets include hospitals and clinics where violations have been detected in the past or high hospitalization rates have been a problem, and oriental medicine hospitals, where treatment costs have risen sharply in recent years.

After inspection, depending on the degree of violation, re-inspection will be carried out within 3 months after administrative guidance, and if corrections are not made, a fine of up to 3 million won will be imposed.
