A device that converts a voice phishing phone number from China to a domestic number 010 is called a repeater. A group of people who hid the repeater in a motel room or a pot in a house to avoid being pursued by the police was caught.

This is KNN reporter Lee Tae-hoon.

<Reporter> The

police find a machine that looks like an internet repeater under a shelf in a motel room.

[Wow. Found!]

It is a repeater that converts voice phishing phone numbers from China to domestic numbers starting with 010.

This repeater was installed without the knowledge of the owner of the domestic organization staying at the motel.

Police also found repeaters in boiler rooms or pots in ordinary houses.

He even drove a vehicle loaded with repeaters and wandered around without being tracked.

[Where are you from? (Thailand.) What is this?]

Mr. A and others have installed about 60 repeaters smuggled in from China since last March in 40 locations across the country, including Busan and Gyeongnam.

[Park Mo-seon/Busan Police Agency's 5th strong team leader: When the crackdown is over, I installed it in another place and committed the crime in this way. Even if it is installed in Busan, you can call the victim in Seoul... .] This is a

caller ID tampering repeater that was actually used in voice phishing crimes.

A's group smuggled these repeaters into Korea by tricking them with computer parts to avoid customs crackdowns.

According to the police, about 30 people were scammed by voice phishing using this repeater, and the amount of damage is estimated to reach 500 million won.

[Voice phishing victim: I came to 010, but it was taken as a normal number.

So believe me.] The

police arrested 18 people, including the repeater operation crew, and arrested 8 people.
