There is a report that a mother in her 60s, a recipient of basic livelihood, is taking care of her ill son in her 30s in a poor environment.

Although the violence of the son suffering from mental illness is increasing, hospitalization is not easy, so the health of the elderly mother is also concerned.

Reporter Min-Jeong Kim reported.

<Reporter> A

neighbor sent me two photos saying it was a pity.

A mother in her 60s who is a recipient of basic livelihood and a son in her 30s suffering from mental illness and diabetes.

As her mother took care of her son, who had recently deteriorated, the whole house became a mountain of garbage.

The mother said that she lived in an underground rented room in Incheon.

After receiving reports from neighbors that the son's violent behavior towards his mother was getting worse and worse, we went to the site.

[Mother, I

came

from that station.] My

mother was alone that day.

[(Where did your son go now?) I went to the hospital… It's like a dream. No.]

He showed me the wounds he received from his son, who became more and more violent.

[((Your son) said he hurt his leg….) From here to here. There was no way to escape, so I was hit straight away.] My

mother was hospitalized for a few days because of her injured leg, and her son was temporarily sent to a nearby nursing hospital.

I went to the health center and asked if my son was being treated properly.

[Person in charge of public health center: A nursing hospital will only perform treatment related to the nursing hospital before discharge. Even within this week, it could be a situation where you have to be discharged from the hospital.] When the

son returns soon, the elderly mother who can't even support her own body has to bear the burden of being a guardian again.

A situation in which the two must be separated and treated immediately.

Local psychiatric hospitals have imposed a condition that a caregiver must be brought to hospitalize the son.

In a situation where they are worried about food, they cannot even afford to find a caregiver.

This year, an emergency public hospital bed was set up for the severely mentally ill, but my son also had other diseases such as diabetes, so it was difficult to be admitted here.

In such a case, public hospitals are the ones that can help the medically vulnerable, but most have become hospitals exclusively for Corona.

The situation of the medically vulnerable class, who already have nowhere to go, is getting worse due to the corona crisis.

[Person in charge of public health center: (Incheon City Medical Center) received an opinion that it was not possible to open general hospital beds because it only accepts corona patients.

He said that he looked at some (public) hospitals in Gyeonggi-do and other Seoul, but he was not sure if he could be hospitalized.]

If not treated quickly, both the son and the mother could be in danger.

Public health centers and welfare centers are working together to save this precarious family, but the reality is that there is no clear-cut solution for now.

[(Do you want your son to be hospitalized and treated?) To raise him well…

(Nevertheless) I am so grateful that I can still give birth to a baby from a weak body.]
