The digital commerce and tech giant Amazon, if it were a person, would be not just a stingy, but a thief.
The US Federal Trade Commission has ordered them to pay almost 62 million dollars (about 52 million euros) to keep the tips of their distributors.
Although it is not yet possible to tip in Spain, Amazon has long implemented its Amazon Flex program, which allows anyone (registered as a self-employed person, since they are never recognized as Amazon employees) to make deliveries on behalf of Amazon in exchange for a commission.
An investigation carried out by the LA Times newspaper found an uncomfortable reality of working for Flex: Amazon kept part of the money from each of the deliveries.
And despite the fact that Amazon claimed that the tips were delivered in full to the delivery men, this was never the case.
One of the cases that has served to give his employees this theft is that of an Amazon Flex delivery man, who delivered a package to himself at home and gave himself a tip of 12 dollars.
In total, he should have received $ 27 for the delivery plus $ 12 for the tip, but Amazon only paid $ 30 total for everything.
The newspaper's investigation prompted Amazon to alter its Amazon Flex policies in August 2019, at which point they actually began to tip their workers 100%.
This has not prevented them from being fined a posteriori for not having implemented this policy from the outset.
Amazon's business practices have given rise to much talk and have brought Jeff Bezos' company to justice on many occasions, either for Alexa failures or for directly handing over address data to law enforcement without consent.
