The 40th anniversary of the May 18th Democratization Movement is held in front of the former Jeollanam-do Provincial Office, which was the last conflict of May 18th.

Since the government's memorial ceremony was designated as a national anniversary in 1997, it was held every year at the National May 18th Democracy Cemetery, but the venue was changed for the first time to contain the special meaning of the 40th anniversary this year.

According to Gwangju City and the Ministry of Veterans Affairs on the 13th, the 40th anniversary of the May 18th Democratization Movement was tentatively decided to be held in the square in front of the former Jeonnam Provincial Office in Dong-gu, Gwangju (5 · 18 Democratic Square).

In order to prevent corona19, it is known that the number of attendees will be limited to about 400.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, the National Veterans Affairs Office has been discussing ways to promote events in front of the former Jeollanam-do Provincial Office, including a diplomatic mission to the Republic of Korea, representatives of civil society and citizens, and installing a large Taegeukgi at the fountain in front of the provincial office.

However, as the Corona 19 spread, the number of attendees was drastically reduced, and the place to commemorate was changed to the National 18th and 18th Democratic Cemetery, as in the previous year.

The former Jeonnam Provincial Office was used by the militias as a situation room when the martial law forces retreated to the outskirts during the May Rebellion.
