Los Secretos take part in the Donamadrid charity campaign with a new version of their song 'Pero a tu lado', performed together with a large number of artists, to raise funds for healthcare in Madrid

At the end of February, the Madrid group Los Secretos , one of the references of La Movida that filled dance floors with hits such as Déjame , Sobre un vidrio mojado or No me imagino , was finishing the presentation tour of Mi Paraíso (2019) , the fourteenth studio album that had just been released six months ago, when the coronavirus crisis stopped all its activity and confined them to their homes, like the rest of the citizenry. Almost immediately, it was confirmed that the group led by Álvaro Urquijo (Madrid, 1962) donated the rights to their legendary song Pero a tu lado to the Community of Madrid to support it in its fight against the pandemic.

Now they return to contribute their grain of sand with a charity campaign, along with the actress and presenter Paz Padilla and the Vespok 360 group, which will raise funds for health in Madrid through Donamadrid. The initiative revolves around its theme But next to you , although this time recorded with the intervention of numerous artists at the same time in their homes. Since his confinement, Urquijo tells us about this campaign, about the current and future of the music industry, among other topics. This afternoon, at 7:00 p.m., he exclusively offers an acoustic in streaming through Metropolis and elmundo.es .

Acoustic of Los Secretos, live | THE WORLD

How do you handle confinement? I guess like almost everyone, worried about uncertainty and with some anxiety. Do you live alone or with a relative? I live with my wife, my daughter, and our dog. What do you do these days? I usually spend about 200 days a year outside. I can say that now I am enjoying my family and my house, where I have my recording studio that, fortunately, allows me to continue my professional activity in some way. I am also taking the opportunity to read and catch up on books that I bought and have not yet read or some series that I did not see in its day. I read many articles about the disease that is confining us. Has this situation inspired you to compose? I've tried and something will come out, but when I have to, I don't feel like making a song that talks about this ... others will do better.

What happened with 'But by your side' is beyond my knowledge. In its day it was a commercial failure and today, without having ever been promoted, it has become our greatest success.

Has the group been heavily involved in charity campaigns, especially since the appearance of Covid-19. Do you feel like it's time to give back to the fans everything they have given you over the years? The Secrets have been collaborating with different NGOs for 20 years or more. Songs like But by your side , Thank you for choosing me , Let me or Hold on to me Maria have already been donated to different charity campaigns several times; Now, with a much more serious and close reason and due to the special nature of the situation, we will continue to do so. Madrid health, CRIS against cancer, Surgery in Turkana and Save The Children are the latest collaborations we have made. The reason is to help, as far as we can. Really, transferring rights or recording a song is nothing compared to the field work of doctors, volunteers and people in general who leave their faces for others and nobody knows, they are the important ones. We have always felt privileged and fortunate for the public we have, this type of action is the least we can do. We owe everything to the people and yes, it is our way of returning everything received. What led you to support the Community of Madrid and not another project? Actually, our initiative is to help those who are helping us. That is our grain of sand. In my city, Madrid, things have been and continue to be very hard for healthcare, I have friends in the trenches, living the day to day of this disaster. What does But by your side mean?for the group? Why did you choose precisely that theme to donate the rights to the Community of Madrid? What happened with that song is beyond my knowledge. It was recorded 25 years ago and was once a commercial failure. Today, and without having ever been promoted, it has become our greatest success. It has its own life, it is part of several generations and its message has penetrated many hearts. At the beginning of the pandemic, when everything started to get worse, they sent me videos of people singing it from the balcony. It was then that we recorded it from our homes each of the members of Los Secretos separately and the video was viewed more than three million times. We did not choose it, it was the people, and now she is once again the protagonist in Donamadrid's charity campaign, with a version that has been joined by more artists. Was it easy to gather so many people to participate? The people of the world of music are supersolidarity and everyone has wonderfully agreed to the initiative to record it together. The list of participants is long: Manolo García, Carlos Tarque, Diego el Cigala, Shuarma (Elefantes), Nacho Campillo, Marlon, Andrés Suárez, Ara Malikian, Paul Alone, Valeria Castro, Demarco Flamenco, David DeMaría, Fredi Leis, Pitingo , Pablo SainzVillegas, Dani Fernández, Pablo Carbonell, David Rees, Taburete, Manuel España (La Guardia), among others. The song will serve to visualize the DonaMadrid campaign, for which we have transferred the copyright, but to extend it to the rest of Spain we have decided to donate the collection or marketing of this song to the initiative of Rafa Nadal and Pau Gasol with Cruz Roja.Recently, the world of culture threatened a "cultural blackout" on social networks in protest at the lack of aid to the sector. What do you think? As I said before, The Secrets are privileged. We did not agree with the suitability of the moment (of the blackout), but solidarity with colleagues who are already having a really bad time inclined us to support this gesture from the world of culture with the treatment it has historically received from politics . In Europe, it is a basic necessity, here it seems that it is not, but what would the planet be without culture? What would confinement without culture have been like? We have been the first to enter unemployment and we will be the last to leave, we just want respect. How do you see this sector in Spain today, do you think it needs subsidies? I do not know what the way is, in fact I do not like politics at all, but I would like to naturally respect and take care of everything related to culture; that on television there were more cultural programs; that social pedagogy be done so that ordinary people value and love everything related to culture, knowledge, science ... I would be satisfied with that, but the labor issue in this sector is dramatic, now and before. I know colleagues who are having a really bad time. At least it is helped like other sectors. I have been told that directly or indirectly there are 700,000 people who live on culture; We artists are just a few, but think of technicians, editors, transporters, box office managers, managers ... and a host of related jobs. If theaters, halls, galleries or bookstores are allowed to close, the damage will be irreparable, not for those of us who make culture, I mean for the entire society. Do you think there will be a before and after in the music industry when everything comes back I am convinced that there will be a before and after in everything, at least until we find treatments, vaccines and protocols for cases like this. As it is something new for society, nobody knows what will happen in the future, but we already know that live shows are going to be the last to become normal. It is difficult to be optimistic. Social networks are being key these days, both for artists and fans. Do you think that these will have a greater weight when it comes to promoting launches, concerts ...? They were important before and now much more. I am sure that they are going to be a small lifeguard for the sector. Nowadays nobody understands an artistic career without a presence on social networks, in fact, these have rescued artists, songs, series and movies for young people who otherwise would never have known them. We use them to be closer to the public, to offer content, songs, concerts ...

If theaters, rooms, galleries or bookstores are closed, the damage will be irreparable, not for those of us who make culture, I mean for the entire society

You have released the YouTube channel Secret Shots ... We have just started and it is not bad. The content will be of all kinds: concerts we have recorded during the tours, individual acoustics, collaborations with other musicians, videos showing our favorite guitars and instruments or how we record the records, from tributes to old songs and a thousand things that have not yet We came up with them. You had a lot of concerts scheduled for the summer, do you think they can be held? Are you optimistic? I am optimistic and I know that this will happen, that we will return to normal or similar in a few months, but how many, no idea. The concerts of this summer I give them up for lost. It will not be the first time that we have to adapt and start from scratch, we have done it three times already, always for a greater cause. Few people know that in 83 they kicked us out of Polygram, and it took us three years to get over it; At that time not being in a record company was ruin, you did not appear on the radio or on TV, and you literally ceased to exist. How do you see the future of Los Secretos? Six months ago we have released Mi Paraíso , our latest album. Everything is stopped now, but surely there will be new jobs of ours later. What about the future of the music industry? The music industry has been adapting technically and socially since it was born. Music and culture in general go hand in hand with humanity, and if humanity has done anything it is to overcome hecatombs, wars and crises of all kinds. Sure it will have a future, but I do not know which one, it will probably be more linked to social networks and the internet than now, which it already is and a lot.
