The Marriott hotel chain announced Friday the piracy of a database that could contain the information of about 500 million customers, noting that an internal investigation had revealed "unauthorized access" since 2014.

It said in a press release that it received a report on September 8, 2018 regarding an attempt to gain access to a large file of US bookings, and the investigation revealed that an "unauthorized third party" had "copied and encrypted information, and had undertaken operations to remove them .
