Rosi Mittermaier's prime year on the alpine slopes was 1976. Then, at the Innsbruck Olympics, she won double gold when she won both the downhill and the slalom.

In addition, she finished second in the giant slalom.

In the same year, she was chosen as the sports personality of the year in Germany, and won the overall world cup - in other words, the same thing that Ingemar Stenmark did that year.

Her husband, whom she married in 1980, was also a slalom star: Christian Neureuther, who won six World Cup races.

Together they had a son Felix Neureuther in 1984, who also became a successful alpine skier, including a WC gold in the Bormio team competition in 2005.

Mittermaier died on Wednesday, according to a statement to the German news agency DPA, "peacefully, after a serious illness".
