Fernando de Carvalho Lopes, who previously coached the Brazilian national gymnastics team, has been accused of raping four gymnasts.

One of the gymnasts is said to have been 13 years old when the rape took place, reports Globo Esporte, which has seen the trial held behind closed doors.

Now the verdict has come.

A court in São Bernardo do Campo, near São Paulo, has imposed a prison sentence of 109 years and eight months.

Fernando de Carvalho Lopes denies the charges and still has the option of appealing the sentence.

He also does not have to serve the prison sentence until after any appeal process has been completed.

The coach looked after young gymnasts for 20 years, but was removed from his national team assignment ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after one of the young gymnasts' parents made a complaint.

In April 2019, de Carvalho Lopes received a lifetime ban from all gymnastics-related activities.

Not the first rape scandal

In addition to the rapes, approximately 40 practitioners have accused the former coach of being subjected to mental, physical or sexual abuse by him.

It is not the first time gymnastics has been rocked by rape.

In 2018, the USA's former national team doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to several life sentences for abuse of several hundred female gymnasts, most of whom were minors.

Also in Great Britain, Greece, Australia and New Zealand, gymnasts have testified about abuse by coaches.
