Top favorite Fred Kerley won the 100 meter sprint at the World Athletics Championships.

The American won in Eugene on Saturday (local time) in 9.86 seconds ahead of his two compatriots Marvin Bracy and Trayvon Bromell, who were each timed in 9.88 seconds.

Bracy got silver, Bromell got bronze.

"We said we'd do it, and we did it.

USA baby," Kerley said in a first reaction over the stadium microphone.

It was the United States' third time in the 100-meter gold, silver and bronze and the first since 1991, when Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell and Dennis Mitchell did so in Tokyo.

Bolt's record out of reach

“All of us wanted gold.

I'm just so glad we cleaned it all up here in Oregon," Bromell said.

The World Championships will be held in the USA for the first time.

Kerley was slower to win than he had been in the heats when he set the best time of 9.79 seconds.

The world record of 9.58 seconds set by Usain Bolt in 2009 remained out of reach.

Defending champion Christian Coleman from the USA finished sixth with 10.01 seconds.

The recently ailing Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs from Italy did not compete in the semi-finals.

Kerley's victory was the eleventh world title for the USA in the men's 100 meters.

Overall, the country won 28 medals in the competition, more than all other nations combined, according to official figures.
