In a very open 100m final at the Tokyo Olympics, the Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs pulled out all the stops on Sunday August 1 to become the fastest man in the world.

The sprinter won in 9:80, a new European record, and became the first European Olympic champion on the straight line since Briton Linford Christie in 1992.

He beat the American Fred Kerley (9.84) and the Canadian Andre de Grasse (9.89).

The American Trayvon Bromell, favorite in the 100m before the Olympics, was eliminated in the semifinals.

Lamont Marcell Jacobs succeeds sprint legend Usain Bolt, triple champion in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
