Next-generation PCRs are here to stay.

LaLiga launches this weekend two systems for collecting coronavirus samples that are more comfortable, agile and cheap.

Goodbye to the annoying stick

that seems to enter the brain.

Ten teams from LaLiga Santander and SmartBank will use these methods and it is expected that by the end of November all professional clubs will use them.

Some pioneering tools at European level.

The new procedures are performed with saliva and oropharyngeal rinse.

With the first, footballers only have to

secrete saliva

and deposit it in a container;

with the second, after ingesting two serums, gargle and spit into a pot.

The samples are collected, analyzed in the laboratories and in less than 24 hours they already have the results.

These methods will be controlled by the

doctors and specialists

of the teams.

Despite the fact that this route would allow the players and technicians themselves to collect the sample from their homes, LaLiga will continue to carry out the tests with medical personnel.

SYNLAB laboratories have tested the efficacy of these systems, with identical results to traditional nasopharyngeal swab PCR.

However, in the coming weeks, LaLiga will jointly carry out the PCRs and the saliva and rinse controls.

In this first phase, as a pilot test, the alternative of saliva is available to Huesca,

Atlético de Madrid

, Real Sociedad, Málaga and Girona.

The rinse will have Betis, Alavés, Valencia, Almería and Girona.

With the election of these clubs, the most reliable representation of the Spanish geography has been sought.

THE ANNOYANCE

Jaime Blanco

, executive agent of the Presidencies and responsible for coordinating the tests between LaLiga clubs, recalls that in May they began to carry out daily exams and that for each day there were about 2,800 PCRs.

«All control is little, but we are aware of the inconvenience that is caused, so we look for new techniques to prevent contagion with

maximum reliability

while trying to make life easier for players and coaches.

Now, with this new detection system, we gain in comfort and have more advantages ”.

Blanco assures that the laboratories have guaranteed the reliability of methods that until now have only been used in

hospitals

and in very small centers.

Unprecedented in sport.

José Manuel Álvarez

, Betis doctor, highlights that they are less invasive procedures: «They are more comfortable, less aggressive and represent an important advance at a logistical level.

Techniques that, with a little training, players and assistants could perform themselves.

Its use will reduce time and inconvenience.

Everything is

cleaner and more careful

».

At present, the frequency of testing in Spanish professional football is very high.

A team that only plays one game a week performs three antigens and one PCR.

With meetings during the week, the controls increase.

SANITARY FIELD

The doctor of the Sevillian team emphasizes that the value of these pioneering systems will go beyond sports: “If everything goes well with football, it will go, studies can be transferred to the general health field.

Everything would be streamlined, because

previous appointments

for the tests would

no

longer be necessary

, it would be enough for the citizen to do the control in his own home and take the sample to the health center.

The specialists in the monitoring of Covid-19 coincide with the benefits indicated by the Betis doctor and emphasize that they can be a very valid alternative for the study of viral detection in children.
