Mount Etna erupted on the Italian island of Sicily on Sunday, spewing ash into the city of Catania, forcing authorities to close the city's airport and suspend domestic flights.

Authorities at the airport, south of Mount Etna, said on Facebook that the ash had made use of the runway risky, and flights would resume when "safety conditions are restored".

People in Catania and the nearby town of Adrano shared photos of cars and ash-covered roads, and no damage or injuries were reported.

Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology recorded increased activity starting in the early hours of Sunday. As a precautionary measure, civil protection authorities have raised the alert level of the area.

Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world with frequent eruptions ranging from large to limited.

On Saturday, more than 36,<> Italians were forced from their homes by floods in the northeast, where rising water levels inundated homes and landslides isolated small villages, regional officials said on Saturday.
