An ash cloud from the Shiveluch volcano has risen about 15 kilometers above sea level, threatening air traffic passing in the area, according to local authorities who are keeping an eye on the peninsula's many volcanoes. The ash has been scattered by the wind over large areas.

Residents of the region are urged to stay at home.

Shiveluch is the most active volcano in Russia and the northernmost volcano on Kamchatka. A few days ago, there was an eruption in the Bezymyanny volcano, which is a little further south.

The Kamchatka Peninsula lies along the volcanically active "ring of fire" that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. On the sparsely populated peninsula there are about 60 volcanoes.
