Amid repeated missile attacks by Russia across Ukraine and daily air defense alerts, kindergartens in the capital Kyiv are training to familiarize children with shelter conditions so that they can evacuate without fear.

At a kindergarten in the center of Kyiv, the basement, which had been used as a warehouse since last summer, has been used as a shelter for children and teachers to evacuate when an air defense alert is issued in response to the military invasion by Russia.

Illustrations and stickers are affixed to the walls of the shelter, and children's favorite toys are prepared so that children can spend their time without anxiety.

In addition, small groups spend time in the basement about once a week to help the children get used to the shelter environment.

On the 1th, when NHK visited for coverage, eight kindergarten children aged 17 to 3 went down to the underground shelter with two teachers and spent about 4 minutes singing and dancing.

Ms. Alla Pismenchuk, the director of the school, said, "At first, the children were sometimes anxious, but once they knew it was a safe place, they were no longer scared, and we will continue this educational method."
