It was on Thursday afternoon that the avalanche raged below Nuoljá.

Several helicopters, both from Sweden and Norway, were alerted and mountain rescuers with avalanche dogs were flown to the scene.

Half a kilometer wide

The size of the avalanche measured almost half a kilometer in width and the search operation lasted for hours.

The police received information that three people with snowshoes were seen in the area just a quarter of an hour before the masses of snow thundered down the mountain - but no one is said to have been injured.

- The group of three people has been mistaken for another party and neither of the two groups was in the area when the avalanche started, the police said on Thursday evening.

The area is secured

Even if the rescue mission is called off, there is still a lot of work to be done.

The area is considered too dangerous to stay in and during Friday several security measures will be taken.
