An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck Kahramanmaraş in southern Turkey at dawn today, Friday.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said - in a statement - that the earthquake occurred at 05:53 local time.

It added that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.95 kilometers below the surface of the earth, and its epicenter was the Oniki Shabat district.

On the sixth of last February, two earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed by thousands of violent aftershocks, killing tens of thousands of people and leaving huge material damage.

Yesterday, Thursday, teams from the Ministry of Environment and Housing in Turkey began examining and evaluating the cracked buildings in a number of cities, after the great devastation caused by the Kahramanmaraş earthquake in several Turkish states last month.

The authorities intend to take strict measures during the new construction operations, in light of mounting fears of similar consequences in the event of further earthquakes.
