Palestinian media reported that clashes broke out between Palestinian youths and settlers in Al-Zaytouna Square in the town of Hawara on the outskirts of Nablus (in the northern West Bank), while the United States called on the Israeli government to ensure accountability for those responsible for the attacks.

A video recording, broadcast by an Israeli channel, documents scenes of car tires being set on fire by the side of the road in Al-Zaytouna Square.

Earlier on Monday evening, an Israeli died of serious injuries sustained when his car was shot near Jericho, while the Israeli occupation army imposed a siege on the city in an attempt to arrest the perpetrators.

According to the Israeli Channel 12, the perpetrators of the Jericho attack opened fire on cars in 3 different locations.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that a gunman fired at a car, then returned and shot at another car, hitting it. After a short distance, he shot at a third car, but missed it. After that, he and a colleague set their car on fire, and fled towards the city of Jericho.

Palestinian factions praised the Jericho operation, and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said that it comes within the framework of responding to the crimes of the occupation army and its settlers, and the Islamic Jihad Movement blessed it, and praised what it described as the courage of its perpetrators.

And last Sunday, the town of Hawara and a number of Palestinian villages in the vicinity of the city of Nablus witnessed unprecedented attacks by Israeli settlers, which resulted in the death of a Palestinian, dozens of injuries, and the burning and destruction of dozens of Palestinian homes and cars, after two settlers were killed in a shooting at a car they were traveling in near the town.

The Israeli occupation authorities did not announce the arrest or prosecution of the settlers responsible for the attacks in the Palestinian towns.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said - during an inspection tour of the site of the Hawara attack - that the coming period may witness complex and difficult days on various fronts in the West Bank and on the border with Gaza.

The Israeli official instructed the continuation of the search operations to arrest the perpetrators of the operation, dead or alive, according to him.

The occupation army announced the reinforcement of its forces in the West Bank with a fourth battalion, starting from Monday evening, after assessing the security situation.

And Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and provide protection for the Palestinian people from settler attacks that are carried out with the protection of the occupation army and political cover from their government, as he put it.

Al-Maliki added - in a statement to Al-Jazeera - that the failure to take international measures gives Israel exceptional immunity with impunity.

American condemnation and a call for accountability

For its part, the US State Department condemned what it called the widespread and indiscriminate violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers against the Palestinians, which amounted to murder.

In a press conference, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that the United States expects the Israeli government to ensure full accountability and legal trial for those responsible for these attacks, in addition to compensation for lost homes and property for Palestinians.

He stressed that "accountability and justice must be pursued with equal rigor in all cases of extremist violence."

In turn, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, renewed his strong condemnation of what he described as the terrorist acts and violence that took place in Hawara, and called for the perpetrators to be held accountable.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said that Guterres stresses that acts of violence and incitement must stop immediately, stressing that "terrorism, arson or acts of reprisals against civilians cannot be justified."

He urged all parties to take measures to calm the situation and refrain from steps that would inflame the already volatile situation.

The killing of an Israeli-American

In the context, Price announced that an Israeli was killed yesterday, Monday, during acts of violence that took place in the city of Jericho in the occupied West Bank, and he also holds American citizenship.

"We condemn the horrific killing of two Israeli brothers near Nablus, and of an Israeli near Jericho, according to our information, who is also an American citizen," Price said.

Washington's ambassador to Israel, Tom Nedis, said - in a tweet on his Twitter account - unfortunately, I can confirm that an American citizen was killed in one of the terrorist attacks in the West Bank tonight.

A settler tries to run over an Israeli officer

On the other hand, the Israeli occupation army reported yesterday evening, Monday, that a settler tried to run over one of its officers in the northern West Bank, while others threw stones at the occupation soldiers.

The occupation army said - in a statement posted on its Twitter account - a number of (Israeli) citizens - earlier this evening (Monday) - threw stones at the Israeli army forces in the gas junction area (west of Nablus).

He added that a settler tried to run over an army officer who was standing at the checkpoint, and the force responded by shooting the car's tires, but it managed to escape.

The occupation army said that one of its commanders in the West Bank was verbally and physically assaulted last Sunday when he tried to remove settlers who were throwing Palestinian cars at the Rimonim settlement near Ramallah (center).

He added that the suspects verbally assaulted the officer and pushed him away, pointing out that the Border Police arrested two settlers involved in the incident.

For his part, the Israeli Defense Minister said - in a tweet on Twitter, commenting on settler attacks on army personnel - that Jewish rioters attacking Israeli army soldiers is a wrong and very dangerous act.

There will be no tolerance for lawbreakers.

Since the beginning of this year, 66 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli occupation, including 11 during the occupation's storming of the city of Nablus (in the northern West Bank) last Wednesday.

In response to these attacks, Palestinians carry out shooting operations, especially in occupied East Jerusalem;

As a result, 14 Israelis have been killed since the beginning of 2023, according to Israeli media.
