In the United States, Republican Nikki Haley declared herself a presidential candidate for 2024 on Tuesday, February 14 in a video.

The former US ambassador to the UN and former governor of South Carolina did so in an "

optimistic

 " tone, notes

The Hill

.

She becomes, according to the news site, the first Republican to run against former President Donald Trump – even though she said two years ago that this would not be the case.

But, notes

USA Today

, she let it guess for weeks and spoke not long ago, adds the

New York Times

, of a need for "

change of generation

 ".

USA Today paints a portrait of the new candidate: pro-life – that is to say anti-abortion – support for Israel, support for the fight against illegal immigration.

But she did not support the law that required transgender people to use the toilet of the gender they were assigned at birth.

Nikki Haley is expected to formally announce her candidacy this Wednesday in Charleston, South Carolina.

In Peru, investigation into people killed during demonstrations

In Peru, an investigation was opened to find out whether the security forces killed demonstrators on December 15, recalls

El Comercio

.

It is the office of the prosecutor specialized in human rights of the department of Ayacucho which opened this investigation, explains

 La República

, "

to determine as clearly as possible what is the responsibility of the military and police leaders

 ".

The newspaper recalls that the investigation by the IDL-Reporteros information site revealed that six of the ten victims had been shot dead, and that they had not been killed while trying to take Ayacucho airport but after , by soldiers who were chasing them when they had been expelled from the airport.

The prosecutor's office, reports

El Comercio

, recovered 147 videos from nearby municipalities and homes, and interviewed those injured in the protests.

At the same time, reports

Perú.21

, one of the vice-presidents of Parliament asks that the prosecutors of seven regions come to report to the justice commission on the progress of the investigations into the 60 people who died during the demonstrations in clashes with the police , traffic accidents or road blockages.

In Haiti, the island of La Gonâve also suffered violence

Le Nouvelliste

examines the situation on the island of Gonâve, whose inhabitants are also victims of the violence that crosses the country.

The island is almost cut off from Port-au-Prince, while 80% of what they consume comes from Port-au-Prince, Artibonite, Cabaret, Arcahaie, explains the newspaper.

Residents must take alternate routes.

But, as a result of insecurity, transport is becoming more and more expensive, with bandits operating everywhere and even on the sea, stealing boat engines, taking travelers hostage like this resident, kidnapped with the other passengers of a bus on their arrival in Liancourt: "

They stole everything we had before placing us in an isolated house after several hours of walking

 ".

His family will pay 150,000 Haitian dollars for his release.

Faced with this situation, the airline "MAF" is coming to the aid of Gônaviens, writes

Le Nouvelliste

, but reservations are exploding, and again, prices are rising.

In Cuba, half of the population of the island affected yesterday by a new blackout

The blackout affected the entire eastern part of the island, from Ciego de Avila to Guantanamo;

information given by the Electrical Union of Cuba, reports

14ymedio

.

The Ministry of Energy claims in a tweet that the disconnection from the network is due to a fire in a sugar cane field.

Six provinces have been affected,

El Nuevo Herald

reports .

It's the biggest outage since September 17, when the island's entire power system collapsed.

14ymedio recalls that the cuts that took place last year for the last six months were at the origin of the latest demonstrations on the island.

From, "

the government was pleased with the few electrical problems at the beginning of this year.

But the optimism did not last long, with authorities saying there would be outages between January and April to prepare the electrical system for the large summer demands

 .

In the United States, the mental health of adolescent girls worries

In the United States, health authorities are sounding the alarm about the mental health of high school students, particularly young girls.

According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, nearly three in five teenage girls felt persistent sadness in 2021, twice as many as boys, reports The New York

Times

.

The report also shows a high level of violence, depression and suicidal thoughts among lesbian, gay and bisexual young people, with more than one in five students saying they had attempted suicide in the previous year.

Fourteen percent of girls surveyed say they have been forced to have sex at some point in their lives: that's 12% more than in 2011. A CDC member called for a look at what can lead boys to inflict this sexual violence.

The level of ill-being is the highest in ten years, and reflects, the newspaper explains, "

a long-simmering national tragedy that has worsened with the isolation and stress of the pandemic

 ".
