Lavrov in Mauritania offers support from Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was visiting Nouakchott on Wednesday 8 February.

He spoke this morning with President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.

Nouakchott is the second leg of his African tour which started the day before in Bamako.

During his meeting with the Mauritanian president, the head of Russian diplomacy notably mentioned security issues in the Sahel, but also the crisis in Western Sahara.

Sergei Lavrov spoke alone after his meeting with Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.

He recalled the concerns shared, according to him, by the two countries, regarding the security situation in the Sahel.

We must work together to effectively combat the terrorists who are more and more present 

", explained Sergei Lavrov, without however announcing concrete measures or a new partnership.

The Russian Foreign Minister also spoke about the crisis in Western Sahara.

Russia has always been a friend of Western Sahara,

We must look for concrete solutions to break the deadlock and for the decisions of the UN Security Council to be implemented

 ”.

In conclusion, Sergei Lavrov spoke about the war in Ukraine and its global consequences.

He particularly deplored that Africa is undergoing a food supply crisis, the responsibility for which, according to him, lies " 

with the illegal and illegitimate sanctions of the United States and its satellites 

".

Sergei Lavrov is expected tomorrow in Khartoum, Sudan, to conclude his African tour, which comes a few months before the Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg.
