According to journalists, between August and September 2022, a group of Russian hackers sent letters to laboratory scientists and created fake login pages to get hold of passwords.

The agency did not elaborate on why the labs were chosen as "targets" for the programming team. 

There were no official comments from laboratories or US departments.

American researchers previously stated that they had recorded Russia's attempts to influence the outcome of the US congressional elections.

In June, CNN, citing sources, reported that US authorities feared hypothetical interference by Russian hackers in the US elections this fall.

According to officials, this may be done to demonstrate the insecurity of the country's electoral system.
