Death toll from floods in Sudan rises to 112

The death toll from floods caused by torrential rains in Sudan has risen to 112, and thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, police said Sunday.

Heavy rains usually fall in Sudan between May and October, causing damage to homes, infrastructure and crops.

Sudan declared a state of emergency last week in six states due to the floods.

The official spokesman for the Civil Defense told AFP that "the number of deaths due to the floods reached 112, in addition to 115 injuries," and more than 34,000 houses collapsed.

The United Nations, quoting government data a week ago, said that 226,000 people were affected by the floods in Sudan, and the most affected areas were the states of Gedaref, Kassala, North and South Kordofan, in addition to the Darfur region, according to the United Nations.
