The visit of Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi was not the cause of the crisis in relations between Washington and Beijing - it was allegedly created by the Chinese side.

This statement was made by the US Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns.

“We do not believe that there should be a crisis in US-China relations because of the visit to Taiwan - a peaceful visit - by the speaker of the House of Representatives ... This is a crisis that was artificially created by the Beijing government.

It was an overreaction," Burns told CNN.

Now, according to an American diplomat, "the government of Beijing must convince the rest of the world that in the future it will act peacefully."

“I think there is a lot of concern around the world that China is now a factor of instability in the Taiwan Strait, and this situation is not in anyone's interest,” Burns added.

The American ambassador also called China's response, which conducted exercises near the island, an attempt to "intimidate and pressure the Taiwan authorities," and said that Beijing allegedly "led a global campaign" to blame the instability in the region on the United States.

“We have made our position very, very clear (regarding the preservation of our political course. -

).

The question here is... Will one government react in an aggressive and violent way to undermine the peace?

This should excite everyone in the world,” said Nicholas Burns.

Conscious demarche

The escalation around Taiwan peaked in late July - early August, after Democrat Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced her intention to visit the island.

Despite the growing tension around this issue, sharp criticism and protests from China, Nancy Pelosi still arrived on the island for a visit on August 2.

After that, the Chinese armed forces on August 4 launched large-scale military exercises with rocket firing in six waters around Taiwan.

Nancy Pelosi herself, upon returning to the United States, told the American media that "it was worth it" and that the United States "cannot allow the Chinese government to isolate Taiwan."

Despite statements by American politicians and officials about the “peaceful nature” of the visit and the right that Pelosi has for it, Beijing views this move as purely provocative.

In particular, this was stated by Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui.

“Despite China’s strong protest and repeated warnings, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi pointedly visited Taiwan, which caused great surprise and unanimous condemnation of the entire world community,” the diplomat said in an interview with TASS.

He stressed that Pelosi's demarche "is a blatant provocation and a gross infringement on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China" and violates the provisions of the joint communiqués signed by Washington and Beijing.

Zhang Hanhui pointed out that Beijing is "taking strong countermeasures" regarding this situation, and added that "all the consequences lie entirely with the American side and the separatist forces advocating the so-called independence of Taiwan."

It is worth noting that less than two weeks after the trip to the island of Nancy Pelosi, a delegation of American congressmen from both parties arrived there, led by Democratic Senator Ed Markey.

sensitive issue

It should be noted that, despite the fact that Washington declares its adherence to the principle of one China, the United States supports Taipei and regularly sends warships to the region.

Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui stressed that "the Taiwan issue is the most important, key and sensitive issue in China-US relations."

“The one China principle is the central tenet and political foundation of China-US relations.

However, while the United States, on the one hand, keeps talking about “maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait”, “preserving the status quo in the Taiwan Strait” and “restoring order between the US and China”, on the other hand, they allowed Pelosi, despite universal condemnation, visit Taiwan," TASS quoted the diplomat as saying.

From his point of view, the true goal of the United States is the intention to "play the Taiwan card at all costs to curb the development of China."

For their part, analysts note that US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns, by his statements, is trying to shift responsibility for tensions in relations to Beijing, which in reality lies entirely with Washington.

“There is only one state that constantly creates turbulence in the world space and constantly claims the status of world hegemon, and that is the United States.

Therefore, the American ambassador, in the best traditions of Western propaganda, says exactly the opposite of what is actually happening.

In this case, it is the United States that is trying to contain China, ”said Alexander Mikhailov, head of the Bureau of Military-Political Analysis, in a conversation with RT.

He added that the United States uses the same methods that they use in their policy towards Russia, creating points of tension around China, to which Beijing cannot but react, after which they oppose it with accusations of destabilizing the situation.

“For all the painful issues for the PRC, the Americans have their own scenarios that involve the creation of a hotbed of tension near the Chinese borders,” the political scientist explained.

As, in turn, Yevgeny Grachikov, an expert at the Center for Research on World Socialism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted in a RT commentary, the issue of the status and integration of Taiwan is an internal issue for the Chinese side, not an international one, and therefore Beijing is forced to respond to US attempts to or influence it.

“To intervene in this issue means deliberately aggravating the situation around Taiwan and the adjacent water area.

When the American ambassador makes such statements, he expresses an ambivalent position: “We recognize the principle of one China, however, we will do what we want.

Supply weapons, make visits, treat Taiwan as an independent state.”

Naturally, China does not like this, and no one would like it,” Grachikov stressed.

He believes that the visits of US Congress representatives to Taiwan show that America purposefully and deliberately aggravates the situation around the island.

The parallels with the methods that Washington uses against Russia are obvious to the Chinese authorities, the expert is sure.

“The authorities of Russia and China understand very well all these foreign policy moves and maneuvers of the US presidential administration, it is all very easy to read.

If China used to remotely and speculatively perceive the whole situation in Europe around Ukraine and the reaction of the Russian Federation to it, now they clearly feel the approach of NATO infrastructure to East Asia, ”concluded Grachikov.
