On August 10, 1937, Russian politician Anatoly Sobchak was born. Prior to the start of perestroika in the USSR, he worked as a lawyer and taught law in various higher educational institutions of the country. In 1989, Sobchak was elected a people's deputy of the Soviet Union and a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Later he headed the Leningrad City Council and became the first mayor in the history of St. Petersburg. As part of the Constitutional Conference, Sobchak participated in the development of the draft Constitution of Russia, adopted at the 1993 referendum. Sobchak entered politics at a turning point in the history of the country and became one of the first statesmen of the new formation.
