Italian army experts detonated a World War II bomb in the north of the country, in an operation that saw the evacuation of 3,000 people for security reasons, according to local media.

On Sunday, the Italian news agency ANSA reported that the 450-kilogram bomb was detected in the Po River near Mantua, about 160 km southeast of Milan.

According to the agency, army experts removed the detonator from the bomb before it was moved to a cave about 45 km away, where it was detonated in a controlled manner.

About 3,000 residents of the area around the site where the bomb was discovered were evacuated, and residents began returning to their homes in the afternoon.
