During the month of July, mainly two violent crimes with young suspected perpetrators have attracted attention.

One in Vällingby and one in Skellefteå.

Between 2015 and 2019, the number of crimes with a suspected perpetrator under the age of 15 increased by 40 percent.

During the pandemic, the increase has leveled off somewhat, and in 2021 the figure was 9,367 according to statistics from the Police.

"It is a serious situation, but if all good forces help each other and advance their positions now - then we will turn the tide," says police chief Carin Götblad in a press release.

This is how young people under the age of 21 are punished

Young people between the ages of 15 and 20 can be sentenced to either youth care or youth service, youth supervision or closed youth care.

Children under the age of 15 cannot be held responsible for crimes and cannot be sentenced to punishment, but when it concerns serious crimes such as murder or aggravated rape, a court can examine the issue of guilt through a so-called "evidence case" requested by the National Board of Health and Welfare.
