Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that the opening of power lines to Romania marked the start of a process that could help the European Union reduce its dependence on Russian hydrocarbons.
He made the comment in a daily video address broadcast after his Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that exports had started earlier in the day, with a volume of 100 megawatts, against the backdrop of the war with Russia entering its fifth month. .
This is "another significant step in our rapprochement towards the European Union", said the Ukrainian president, whose country formally obtained last week the status of candidate for membership of the community bloc.
"Thanks to Ukrainian electricity, a significant part of the Russian gas used by European consumers can be replaced," he added.
"It is therefore, for us, not only a question of export earnings but a question of security for the whole of Europe".
“Let me remind you that connecting our country to the EU energy system happened after the war started. Ukraine is now achieving things that once seemed impossible,” Volodymyr Zelensky continued.
