• While work has begun on part of rue de Metz, the town hall of Toulouse has presented its “Left bank – right bank” project, which aims to reduce car traffic and secure that of pedestrians and bicycles.

  • Two-way cycle paths will be created in Place Esquirol, Quai de Tounis and Rue de la République.

  • The Saint-Pierre bridge will be one-way from next year, after a pedestrian experiment this summer, from July 18 to August 22.

For several months, work has been underway on part of rue de Metz in Toulouse, between the War Memorial and Place Esquirol.

From September, no more buses will run on this structuring artery of the city center and in the long term, the only car traffic lane limited to 20 km/h, will be accessible only to local residents, delivery people and delivery services. 'emergency.

A project that aims to reduce the flow of transit and calm traffic, but also to secure pedestrians and cyclists in this sector thanks to the establishment of a two-way cycle path.

This project is the first act of another of greater magnitude between the two banks of the Garonne.

Monday evening, the town hall of Toulouse presented the main lines of its “left bank-right bank” project, which involves an overhaul of travel in the Esquirol sectors, rue de la République, quai de Tounis or even the Saint bridge. -Pierre over the next year.

Secure cycling continuity

“With the closure of rue de Metz to through traffic and buses, road traffic will be reduced by 30% in this sector.

With this project, our objective is to offer continuity of the cycle path over the entire length, from the War Memorials to Saint-Cyprien”, explains Julie Escudier, the district mayor.

In Esquirol and on the rest of rue de Metz in the direction of Pont-Neuf, cars and buses will now travel on the same lane, while a second lane will be devoted solely to buses in the opposite direction.

A central reservation where a bus shelter will be installed will be created and the secure two-way track will emerge between this raised space and the pedestrian plateau located in front of Midica.

It will join that of the Pont-Neuf, before connecting the rue de la République where a two-way track will emerge on the even side, where the parking spaces will be removed in favor of a widening of the sidewalks and the installation of terraces.

“This creation of a two-way track is a step in the right direction, it's good news that will improve traffic conditions for cyclists and ensure continuity between the right bank and the left bank.

This is certainly a positive point for novices to start cycling.

However, we maintain our proposal to completely pedestrianize the Pont-Neuf to appease this axis, instead of making small touches, the town hall should go there frankly ”, underlines Florian Jutisz of the association Two feet Two wheels.

Say goodbye to the Quai de Tounis parking lot, make way for bicycles

In the continuity of that of the Quai de la Daurade, a new two-way cycle path will also see the light of day on the Quai de Tounis in place of the parking spaces which now run along the quay.

Residents will therefore no longer be able to park there, but spaces will be created elsewhere.

“There will be 40 places returned in the Port-Garaud district and around fifty will be made available at the resident rate in the Saint-Michel car park.

To reduce speed, which was a request from the inhabitants, we are also going to create a pedestrian plateau.

The flow of traffic will also be down, whether cars or buses, since the Tisséo lines will be reorganized, ”specifies the elected official.

Work on this transformation will begin in the spring for commissioning before the start of the school year next year.

The one-way Saint-Pierre bridge in early 2023, and pedestrian this summer

Motorists who used to take the Saint-Pierre bridge from the right bank to reach the left bank of the Garonne will have to change their habits.

From the beginning of next year, it will become one-way.

Only cars coming from Saint-Cyprien will now be able to use it.

The freed lane will be replaced by a two-way cycle path which will be continuous to the interior square of Saint-Cyprien.

So that it can see the light of day at rue du Pont-Saint-Pierre, and that the sidewalks are widened and vegetated, the parking spaces will be removed.

A time mentioned, the final closure of the bridge to car traffic is not, for the time being, envisaged.

But an experiment will take place this summer from July 18 to August 22.

“Only pedestrians, bicycles and emergency vehicles will have access.

We are going to create a convivial space there and make an ephemeral arrangement with picnic tables for example.

It is an experiment of pedestrianization on which the inhabitants will be brought to give us feedback, ”concludes Julie Escudier.
