The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is actually responsible for the inventory of the country's shelters, but in order to quickly create a picture of what needs exist, Östersund municipality has chosen to make its own inventory.

In total, there are about 650 shelters in Östersund municipality, which actually accommodate more than what lives in the municipality.

But the inventory is about the 65 rooms located in Östersund municipality's properties.

Aged shelters

The requirement is that a shelter can be set up in 48 hours and Stefan Nilsson, security engineer at the municipality, will now compile the inventory to see what needs and costs there are.

- It can be said high and low, but not a disaster.

Many shelters are old and often cluttered with a lot of debris, but there may also be a lack of equipment.

Rubber seals, for example, age and must of course be replaced, says Stefan Nilsson.

Can cost several millions

It is possible to apply for money for certain maintenance from MSB, but Stefan Nilsson still believes that the bill will end up in the municipality.

A rough estimate that he has made is that it will be several million kronor.

- I have tried to apply for money from MSB before and received a resounding no.

There has been talk that new money will be raised for the maintenance of shelters, and then we will of course apply.

But I think the municipal management thinks this is so important that you solve it.
