• From this Monday, May 9, some agents of the Toulouse public transport network will be equipped with pedestrian cameras.

  • The objective of this experiment is to reduce the incivilities and aggressions of which controllers and prevention agents are the target.

  • Wearing a mask, always compulsory in transport, generates in particular situations of tension.

We are familiar with their pocket terminal on which they check the validity of our tickets.

But from this Monday, they will have another equipment in their panoply.

Tisséo has decided to equip its prevention agents – around a hundred people responsible for combating fraud but also for securing the network – with pedestrian cameras.

The announcement of "this experiment which will be the subject of a report" comes ten days after the attack on a team by young people on scooters armed with machetes who did not appreciate a reprimand.

And beyond this act of violence, it is not uncommon for checks to degenerate and feed the chronicle of various facts.

Just last Thursday, a drunk passenger threatened to kill a bus driver who called prevention officers for help.

Wearing a mask is a source of tension

Wearing a mask, still compulsory in transport, but whose users lose the reflex, has also recently contributed to multiplying situations of incomprehension and reactions of annoyance, notes the public management.

“The deployment of pedestrian cameras is essential and complementary equipment to the human presence.

They make it possible to reduce the incivilities experienced by our agents and our travelers on the network, ”said Nicolas Misiak, the president of Tisséo Voyageurs.

And if he is launching this “experiment” now, it is because a legislative decree of April 2021 opens this possibility to public transport operators.

For the time being, the Toulouse network has 70 pedestrian cameras.

The sworn agents who will use them will only turn them on when they deem it necessary and a magnifying glass will then indicate to their interlocutors that the device is on.

This will be the signal to take a fine with philosophy, or a raise of suspenders without rebelling.

Waiting for the cameras in the trains

As for the municipal police, which draws a positive assessment of this equipment, in particular “to defuse tense situations”, the images will not be kept beyond a period of thirty days.

The agents will not have direct access to it and will only be used at the request of justice in the context of a possible investigation.

The presence of cameras on the Tisséo network is nothing new Some 3,000 cameras are already in permanent operation.

And the system will be considerably reinforced by the installation of video surveillance cameras inside the 116 trains of the two metro lines.
