We go out to Licknevarpefjärden, in Kvädöfjärden nature reserve, which is located in the archipelago south of Valdemarsvik.

It is the county's first marine nature reserve and was established in 2007. Neither motor vehicles nor fishing are allowed in the area.

The fishing ban was introduced as early as 1979 in order to reduce the disturbance of nesting sea eagles, and today the place has a significant role for spawning fish.

But the ban can also attract fishermen as fish life is rich, says Mathias Ibbe, aquatic ecologist and one of the fisheries inspectors.

- This is a valuable nature area with forests and sea area.

There are plenty of eagles and plenty of pike, you could say.

Is that exactly why many are attracted here?

- I think so, because many people know this area and know that there is plenty of pike here thanks to the fact that it has been protected for so long, so maybe it's a little extra tempting to come here, says Mathias Ibbe.

Hear him tell how the fishing supervision works and what happens if someone breaks the ban in the clip above.

So far, the county administrative board has carried out a dozen inspections, but no person who has violated the regulations has so far been discovered.

- It is nice and is the best result really, says Mathias Ibbe.

In addition to the County Administrative Board, the Coast Guard and appointed persons carry out fisheries inspections along the coast.

- There are several of us who are helped to complete this assignment.

19 protected areas in the county

As of last year, there are 19 areas in Östergötland that are protected from fishing during the period 1 / 1-15 / 6.

In addition to these, there are two areas in Östergötland that are protected all year round, Stjärnö nature reserve and Licknevarpefjärden.

In addition, there are 13 areas that are protected sea trout rivers, during the period 15 / 9-31 / 12.

- Those who fish have an obligation to know which rules apply, says Mathias Ibbe.

Information about rules when fishing can be found at: svenska fiskeregler.se.

The County Administrative Board is now also working on putting up signs in the affected areas to further clarify what applies.
