China: explosion aboard an oil tanker near Hong Kong

A tanker exploded on the evening of April 16 300 kilometers east of the coast of Hong Kong.

The incident left at least one dead according to a provisional report and a rescue team was dispatched to the scene.

A tanker exploded on Saturday evening 300 kilometers east of the coast of Hong Kong.

The incident left at least one dead according to a still provisional report and a rescue team was dispatched to the scene.

We do not yet know the causes of the accident, the results of which are still provisional.

Among the members of the crew, mainly composed of Indonesian and Burmese men, several injured suffered from first degree burns.

The rescue operation was complicated by strong winds and waves, but injured personnel were eventually evacuated to hospitals in the city.

The authorities of the former British colony were alerted on Saturday evening by the explosion aboard this tanker registered in Panama which was carrying 13 workers.

So far, no oil spills have been observed off Hong Kong.
